Most of the links on this page end up finding their way to free tutorials (some video tutorials). Some got to companies that offer some free and others for a fee. Many require some (free) software. Here are some links on where to get them: Quicktime, VLC, Flash, or Stuffit Expander.
There us another great source for turtorials: Lynda.com. You pay a monthly subscription and have 24/7 access to their training videos online. They also have apps for the iPhone and iPad. Not all subjects are covered. Their focus is less on basic and more on advanced.

iWork for Mac makes it easy to create and design beautiful documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on your Mac.
Pages
This program is a cross between a word processor and a page layout program. Many people use it instead of Microsoft Word, although it is not dead simple to share documents with folks who use Word. Others use it as their design layout program. Although not at the profesional level, there are plenty of attractive templates that make it easy to be your own graphic designer.

Keynote
Keynote is Apple's presentation program, the alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint. Using a similar interface to Pages, it is easy to make better-looking slide shows with lots of fancy effects, both slick and subtle. With PowerPoint you can throw your finished file on a flash stick and hand it to some tech who is going to project it on a screen for you. It will work on a Mac or PC. With Keynote, you need to plan ahead: either have a projector that you can hook up to your Mac or be sure the tech can use your Keynote file without a hitch.
