OS X – Upgrade Requirements |
|
| |
|
Apple’s stated minimum requirements for Leopard (10.5), Snow Leopard (10.6), and Lion (10.7) are different. But none of them really go as far as I think they should. |
|
| |

So you've got Lion. Now what?
Versioning: Apple wants to change the way files are saved. SAVE and SAVE AS will continue to work in non-Apple programs until they are updated to the new versioning system. Versioning is better (trust me), but it means rethinking the most basic way we use the computer.
This article will help.

OS X 10.7 (Lion) |

Apple says to use Leopard your Macintosh needs:
• A Mac computer with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7, or Xeon Intel processor
• 2GB of RAM
• 7GB of free disk space
•
Some features require an Apple ID |
|
| |
|
Mac+Tech suggests you have 4GB of RAM or more if possible. Add even more RAM if possible when running Windows using Parallels or Fusion. Lion is required for using iCloud. |

OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) |

Apple says to use Leopard your Macintosh needs:
• A Mac computer with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7, or Xeon Intel processor
• DVD drive for installation
• 1GB of RAM
• 7GB of free disk space
•

Mac+Tech suggests you limit Snow Leopard installations to any of the processors listed but add RAM as needed to reach 2GB (4GB preferred). Add even more RAM if possible when running Windows using Parallels or Fusion. 10.6.8 is a requirement for wifi syncing of iOS devices (iPhones, etc.). |

OS X 10.5 (Leopard) |
|
| |
|
Apple says to use Leopard your Macintosh needs:
• A PowerPC 867MHz (or faster) G4, or G5 processor, or an Intel processor
• DVD drive for installation
• 512MB of RAM
• 9GB of free disk space
•
Some features require an Intel processor. Others require built-in or compatible video camera, Internet service, and/or a .Mac account. |
|
| |
|
Mac+Tech suggests you limit Leopard installations to 1.33 GHz or faster G4 processors with at least 1GB of RAM, but preferably 2GB or more RAM. Add even more RAM when running Windows on an Intel Mac using Parallels or Fusion. |

OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.3 (Panther) |

Mac+Tech suggests you upgrade all Power PC (PPC) Macs to Leopard if they meet the minimum specifications. These days, most current software and hardware peripherals (like printers) require Leopard. But there is a catch. If your older PPC Mac doesn't meet the specs, don't upgrade the memory just to install Leopard. Avoid investing any money into a computer that old. It is not just slow, it is becoming obsolete. |
